CANDACE CABLE - CHAPTER DIRECTOR
In 1975, at the age of 21, some say disaster invaded Candace's life one early August
morning in Lake Tahoe, California. She accepted a ride home from work
that resulted in an automobile accident and a spinal cord injury leaving her a
paraplegic. From a life threatening injury to outstanding athletic
achievements and personal success Candace's ability to inspire and motivate
others to realize their fullest potential is one of her greatest gifts.
Turning Point Tahoe is a Truckee California nonprofit organization, directed by Candace Cable. Turning Point Tahoe is a chapter of a national organization, Turning Point. Turning Point Tahoe creates recreational and environmental ecucation opportunities for persons with disablitiiesand networks individuals and groups to existing and support in our area. In addition to recreation, Turning Point Tahoe's education program includes motivational speaking, a public school possibilites kit and outreach guidance and equipment for individuals and family members dealing with new and existing injury. We also network with Inclusion Resolution, a business that consults and creates workshops for cities, business and organizaions on how they can increase their revenue by embracing diversity.
Our mission is to fill the gaps that exist in the Tahoe area, raising the standard for persons with disabilities through
education and recreation. Self confidence is instilled by using inspirational examples with an emphasis on outdoor
adventures of fishing, boating, camping, hiking, hunting and cross country skiing. Turning Point Tahoe's belief is that time
spent doing outdoor activity creates connections for people of all abilities to see possiblity.
Turning Point Tahoe's possiblities
program for the public school system, 7th grade students, is a kit titled "Disability to Possibility." The kit created
three years ago by Jan Brittain, Lisa Furr, both educators in the Truckee school district, and Candace is a
message of possibilities and options no matter what happens in our lives. the program uses all aspects of disability
as the model, to illustrate that there are always otions for us no matter what happens in our lives. The kit contains a
workbook curriculum that meets the required state standards for the 7th grade, including language awareness, reading,
word analysis. Meta cognition, science, biology, speaking, current events, history, media, mathematics, analysis, problem
solving, civic laws, creative expression, physical education and more.
Turning Point Tahoe's vision is a world in which all people,
regardless of ability, have opportunities to discover, protect and be inspired by the outdoor. Outdoor adventures have so
much to offer all of us. The beautiful playground of the Lake Tahoe area can be easily accessible to all when the
right information, equipment and instruction are available. For a person with a physical disability, it is not always
easy to find these essentials. Turning Point Tahoe wants to make it easy.
